Not a criticism, just an observation. ![]() Peter’s parents and older sister are fairly clueless as to how to understand him, but their genuine concern for him is evident. ![]() The author does an excellent job communicating Peter and Annie’s feelings of helplessness and frustration, and also succeeds in making the adults, while flawed, seem human and somewhat sympathetic too. These two deeply wounded souls become close friends but also have to combat new bullies, and Annie’s illness, and not being listened to by the adults in their lives. Here he meets Annie, who has cancer and who also feels a special connection to the valley. Peter’s family moves from the city to rural Texas where Peter discovers a valley that seems to be magically in tune with him. He also feels like an outcast in his noisy family, where everyone yells and no one seems to understand him. Peter Stone is a quiet boy who has suffered physical and emotional trauma from being bullied. What did you like about the book? This book is beautifully written and, in spite of the fact that it takes readers to some very dark places, it also has a hopeful ending. Rating: 5 (5 is excellent or a Starred review) ![]()
